UK DEFENCE FORCE STRUCTURE OF THE FUTURE- HOW MANY – NUMBERS REALLY MATTER – JANUARY 2022

After SDSR 2015 was published DefenceSynergia (DS) produced a paper entitled U.K. Force Structure which covered the requirement for a Strategic rationale to be articulated by HMG. It went on to explain that without such a Strategy the funding and ORBAT of HM Armed Forces was a hit and miss affair that left the MoD wide open to cuts, overstretch and mission creep.

After all, if there is no U.K. Government sense of military direction any ORBAT will do. There is no counter argument because without an articulated Strategy for the Service Chiefs to measure their Military Tasking and set the limits of the Defence Planning Assumptions the budget is ‘all things to all men as it can be made to fit any scenario.
The following document is a revision of the 2015 DS paper retitled U.K. Force Structure – How Many? Numbers Matter 2022. Some data has changed over the intervening 6 years but sadly little else. There is still no articulated HMG Strategy.
