DS has followed recent developments in the USA and European NATO with concern. Whether we accept that the USA may distance itself from full NATO commitment or not, it is our view that the issue, having been raised, has brought into stark relief the inherent weakness of the European defence position. Not least that without USA military funding, operational and logistic support, European NATO defence plans (more so European Union defence plans) are little more than rhetorical gestures unless realisable forces and the enablers to rapidly move them are funded.
