DS has constantly maintained that a specific percentage of GDP for UK defence was not as important as funding the British Armed Forces adequately and appropriately to meet the many commitments placed upon them. However, we have also said that 2% of GDP was a moral minimum for this government given the Prime Minister’s strictures on the subject at last years NATO conference in South Wales.
Defencesynergia, therefore, welcomes the Chancellor’s budget commitment to maintain the 2% of GDP for defence target until 2020. However, we remain watchful to see how this figure is calculated, how any extra funding is used to close capability gaps and, crucially, to what extent SDSR 2015 can now be Strategy and not budget led.
